Hi! Glad you are here :~)

What is Schema Acquisition?

Schema Acquisition is a cognitive learning theory that I encountered in my neuroscience thesis. It is loosely defined as linking various elements to form a recognizable pattern that engenders new abstractions or understanding through a class of structure (think: windows, wheels, seats, etc… = car!)

I believe learning about our selfhood and personal world-building is all about big and small experiences of schema acquisition. My logo is inspired by concepts of linkage and multiplicity to create new meanings and systems. Each post is accompanied by “schema(s)” in graphs, charts, doodles, etc.

What do I write about?

Mostly observations and reflections about the self and the internet. My main research and art practice concerns the digital-physical porosity of a user’s personhood in relation to the web and data. I like thinking about:

  • alternate appropriations of platforms as liberatory web practices

  • creative subversion as resistance to digital gentrification

  • parallels of digital and physical embodiment concerning web/user autonomy

  • other random things I find to be compelling and exciting

Who am I?

  • Eileen (she/her), currently based in SF, CA

  • full-time designer, previously on progressive campaigns uplifting issue advocacies/candidates, now at a nonprofit that makes technologies for voting accessibility

  • I also like brutalism, sculptural/layered clothing, and crunchy peanut butter

I would love to hear from you <3 and join me if you want to acquire new schemas together!
